Nevada vs San Jose State Analysis
For Nevada and San Jose State it hasn’t been either of their year’s to say the least. To put it in perspective, the Spartans have lost 12 straight games (all conference play) after starting the season 7-5.
They’ve lost all their conference games resulting in a 7-17 record overall so far. In contrast though, they’re actually 13-10 against the spread. Nevada is similarly as bad as they lost six straight before a big upset win at Utah State in which they were 11 point underdogs.
Overall, the Wolfpack are not good against the spread going just 7-15 thus far. The Spartans desperately need one conference win this year to salvage something so let’s see how they can get it done on the road tonight.
Spartans Seeking First Conference Win
As a team the Spartans only score 65 points per game (352nd nationally) and on offense they rely solely on the three point shot. They shoot it at just over 35% from deep which is good for top 100 in the nation.
Almost 42% of their total points per game come from downtown which ranks top ten in the country. Junior Omari Moore is the go-to player on offense for the Spartans.
He currently leads the team in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals per game while shooting over 45% from three point range.
If the Spartans go down big though, they’re likely to pull Moore out of the game. San Jose State lost their previous five games by an average of 18 points. In those games Moore has only averaged nine points per game.
They’ve really missed the presence of seven foot center Ibrahima Diallo who was lost just before the New Year due to a knee injury and is still out indefinitely.
Wolfpack Ride with Sherfield
Opposite of San Jose State, the Wolfpack struggle from deep averaging 32% shooting from three point range as a team (225th nationally).
They rely on their height as they roster three different players at or near seven feet tall. One of these three players is junior center Will Baker who contributes with over 11 points and five rebounds per game while averaging over 53% shooting from the field.
Guard Grant Sherfield is the WolfPack’s primary playmaker and ball distributor averaging over 18 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists per game. His 6.2 assists per game is good for 7th overall in the country.
Look for another big game from Sherfield as he put up 24 points and five assists in the team’s upset win against the Aggies four days ago.
Nevada vs San Jose State Prediction
With these two set for a home-and-home, they’ll play again at San Jose State on Thursday. With this game being played in Reno, I expect the Wolfpack to ride the momentum they gained after last Friday’s win.
With how the against the spreads records look though, give me San Jose State plus the big 14.5 points.
Prediction: San Jose State +14.5
