Chicago Cubs vs Baltimore Orioles Analysis
On Wednesday night, the Orioles and the Cubs face off for the third game of a three-game series. The Orioles took game one 9-3 and they also were winners in game 2.
For this third and final matchup of this series, the Orioles are starting Spenser Watkins and the Cubs will have Justin Steele take the mound. The Cubs are -140 favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is 8 runs.
Orioles On Fire
The O’s are one of the hottest teams in baseball and they have clawed their way back to a 44-44 record. Baltimore is on a nine-game winning streak and they are 9-1 in their last 10 games.
The Orioles have a 19-27 record on the road this season and they are 51-27 covering the run line as an underdog.
Spenser Watkins will take the mound for the O’s tonight in Chicago. Watkins is 2-1 on the season in 11 starts with a 4.15 ERA, a 4.70 FIP, and a 1.38 WHIP. In his last three starts, Watkins has allowed just three runs on 12 hits in 17.2 innings of work.
On the road this season, Watkins has a 4.01 ERA, a .223 batting average against, a 4.49 FIP, and a 1.22 WHIP. Baltimore is 2-3 on the season in Watkins’ road starts. The Cubs have a .748 OPS at home this season and a .715 OPS against righties.
Cubs Need to Steele a Win
Chicago is on a five-game losing streak and they have dropped to fourth place in the NL Central standings. Chicago is 34-53 on the season and they are 17-28 when playing at Wrigley this year. As a favorite, the Cubs are 7-16 covering the run line in 2022.
Justin Steele will make the start for the Cubs at home tonight. Steele, a lefty, is 3-5 on the season in 16 starts with a 4.13 ERA, a 3.42 FIP, and a 1.38 WHIP. In his last three starts, Steele has allowed seven runs on 15 hits over 17.1 innings of work.
Steele has been much better at home this season and he is pitching to the tune of a 3.14 ERA, a .236 batting average against, a 3.58 FIP, and a 1.38 WHIP. Chicago is 2-1 in his last three home starts and this is his second time pitching against an AL team. The O’s have a .676 OPS against lefties, a .709 OPS in July, and a .681 OPS on the road.
Chicago Cubs vs Baltimore Orioles Prediction
Neither Spenser Watkins nor Justin Steele is lights-out pitchers, so I could see this game having a bunch of runs scored.
Even during this nine-game winning streak, Baltimore still has just a .254 team batting average. The Cubs are losing, but their games have been somewhat close over their last 10. I think this game will go under the total of 8 runs.
Prediction: Under 8 Runs Scored
