Los Angeles Angels vs Detroit Tigers Analysis
The Los Angeles Angels host the Detroit Tigers Wednesday afternoon in the finale of their three game series, and look to complete the sweep. The Angels won easily in game one 10-0, and edged out a 5-4 victory last night.
Detroit will send right-hander Drew Hutchison to the mound, and Patrick Sandoval takes the bump for the home team. First pitch in Angels Stadium is scheduled for 4:07 PM EDT / 1:07 PM PDT.
Both teams are out of the playoff hunt, but LA has played better baseball lately with a 7-3 in their last 10 going into Tuesday night – and Detroit went 3-7 in their last 10.
Each squad is in rebuilding mode as the Tigers also fired general manager Al Avila, and the Angels let go of manager Joe Madden back in May.
Tigers Turn to Future
Drew Hutchison started the year in the bullpen, but has been in the starting rotation since June 14th. And he’s done a decent job for the Tigers with a season long ERA of 4.06, a 1.41 WHIP and a record of 2-7 in 23 games, 13 starts and 82.0 innings.
He’s progressed as the season has gone along, with a 3.04 ERA through five starts and 26.2 innings in August, but a higher-than-average WHIP of 1.50.
Detroit’s main weakness in 2022 has been the lack of hitting and run production. They’re last in team OPS, 27th in batting average and last in home runs.
Whoever the Tigers select as their new GM, upgrading the offense and starting pitching should be his top priorities.
The relief pitching has been the team’s greatest strength, as the bullpen has been in or near the top 10 in ERA most (if not all) of this season.
Angels Playing How They Should’ve Been
Patrick Sandoval is the Angels’ #2 starting pitcher, and his outstanding season has been overlooked because of his talented teammate, Shohei Ohtani. But he’s put up excellent numbers this season, with a 3.02 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP in 22 starts and 122 innings.
The right-hander averages just over a strikeout per inning, almost six frames per start, and has only given up three runs or less in 18 of his 22 outings.
This talented Angels lineup is a free-swinging bunch as they’re 26th in team OPS, 27th in batting average and have the most strikeouts of any team in MLB but they hit the baseball a long way, as they’re tied for 10th with Seattle in home runs.
Trout and Ohtani have a combined 63 bombs, compared to the 80 bombs the Tigers have as a team year-to-date and now that the pressure is off, the Angels have played good baseball, going 7-3 in their last 10.
Los Angeles Angels vs Detroit Tigers Prediction
Now, for the reason you’re here! Los Angeles Angels vs Detroit Tigers prediction and betting pick for September 7. The Angels have a better starting pitcher and lineup, although Detroit has a better bullpen. Hutchison has given up three long flies in his last two starts, and the Halos are good at hitting the ball a long ways.
There’s too much juice on the first five inning money and run lines, but I do like the home team to touch up the Detroit starter for at least one home run. That’s why I’ll take the Angels over 2.5 runs team total for the 1st 5.
