Reds vs Pirates Analysis
After getting swept by the Brewers on the road, the Cincinnati Reds, who have the worst record in baseball, host the Pittsburgh Pirates for a four-game series. The Reds are on a nine-game losing streak and have three wins for the entire season.
Pittsburgh has won just two of their last five games but is certainly looking to improve their record this series. The Pirates are -130 road favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is set at 8.5 runs.
Reds Preview
There’s not much to say about the Reds that their record doesn’t already unveil about this team. They have three wins in 25 games and show no signs of getting back in the win column whatsoever.
As a team, the Reds have a 6.86 ERA, easily the highest in the Majors. The Reds can hit, sort of, so at least they have that going for them, I guess…
Connor Overton will take the bump for the first matchup vs the Pirates this series. Overton made his first start of the season seven days ago and went 5.1 innings allowing one run on three hits and two walks. By Red’s standards, he has been their most impressive pitcher.
Pirates Preview
The Pirates have been playing solid baseball as of late and they are sitting in third place in the NL Central division. The Pirates won their last game vs the Tigers 7-2 and are looking to take care of the Reds on the road.
JT Brubaker will make the start for Pittsburgh. Brubaker has made five starts this season and the Pirates are 3-2 in those games. Through five starts, Brubaker has allowed 14 runs on 19 hits and 12 walks through 20.1 innings. He has a 6.20 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP.
Reds vs Pirates Prediction
This is a matchup between a horrible team and a really underwhelming pitcher. I cannot in good conscious bet the Reds at the moment, but this does seem like a game they can steal. There is minimal value, however, in a 3-22 team as slight home dogs at +110.
So, where is there a solid betting angle in this game? I think I found one, and it has to do with the Reds and scoring runs. My pick for this game is over 2.5 earned runs(+125) for JT Brubaker, the Pirates starter. He has gotten shelled in all his starts, and as I mentioned earlier, at least the Reds are somewhat competitive at the plate.
Prediction: Over 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed by JT Brubaker
