The PLAY: San Diego Padres -135 B Pfaadt (RHP), D Cease (RHP) Must Start
After Arizona won Monday's opener, the Padres took yesterday's game. I like their chances again this evening. Cease has struggled in away games but has been a much different pitcher at Petco Park this season. In fact, he's 3-2 with a 2.76 ERA at home compared to 0-6 with a 6.27 ERA on the road. Pfaadt has also pitched better in his home park; he's got a 6.60 ERA on the road. Overall, Pfaadt is 1-3 with an ugly 8.69 ERA and 1.79 WHIP over his past seven starts. Pfaadt is backed by an Arizona bullpen which has a 5.03 ERA, fourth worst in baseball. On the other hand, San Diego relievers have a combined 3.27 ERA, second only to San Francisco. Given the venue, Cease's 2.49 ERA in three career starts against Arizona and their much stronger bullpen, the Padres should enjoy an edge on the mound. Look for that to translate to another important victory.
