Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies Analysis
The Phillies and the Marlins face off on Tuesday night for a three-game series. The Marlins are coming off being swept by the Braves, and the Phillies are coming off being swept by the Giants.
Philadelphia leads the season series over Miami 8-5. For this game, the Phillies are -235 home favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is 7 runs.
Bats Cold For Miami
The Marlins had some solid stretches this season, but they are currently on a cold stream. Miami is 1-9 in their last 10 games and they have a team batting average of .168.
The offense has been their Achilles heel all year long, and it has slowed them down tremendously during the back half of the season. Miami is 29-40 playing on the road and 45-39 covering the run line as an underdog.
Jesus Luzardo will make the start for Miami tonight in Philly. In 12 starts this year, Luzardo is 3-6 with a 3.44 ERA, a 3.02 FIP, and a 1.04 WHIP. In his last two starts, Luzardo has allowed five runs on nine hits in 13 innings of work.
Most of Luzardo’s innings pitched were on the road this season, and he has been a better pitcher away from Miami. In 39 road innings, Luzardo has a 2.54 ERA, a .129 batting average against, a 2.86 FIP, and a .87 WHIP.
However, despite how much better Luzardo is on the road, the Marlins cannot seem to win when he starts. The Marlins are just 2-5 straight up in Luzardo’s road starts this season.
Phillies Need To Pick Up Pace
The Phillies are still in the thick of the NL playoff race, but they need to stop giving away games. Philadelphia is 4-6 in their last 10 games and their lead in the Wild Card is just two games. On the season, the Phillies are 73-61, they are 39-30 at home, and they are 40-50 covering the spread as a favorite.
Righty Aaron Nola will make the start for the Phillies tonight at home. In 26 starts so far this season, Nola has a 3.43 ERA, .97 WHIP, and a 2.71 FIP.
In his last start, Nola let up eight runs on 10 hits in just four innings of work. Tonight will mark the third time Nola has faced the Marlins this season. In June, he shut down the Marlins at home, and in July, he shut down the Marlins again on the road.
Miami had just 10 combined hits in those two outings. At home this season, Aaron Nola has a 4.04 ERA, a .395 slugging percentage against, a 3.43 FIP, and a .95 WHIP.
Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies Prediction
This game features two struggling teams, but one of these teams still has a lot to play for. Miami is one of the worst teams in baseball right now and they are facing a strong pitcher. I expect the Marlins to cover the run line tonight – they are better on the road, their starter is in better form, and they are on a losing streak.
Prediction: Miami Marlins +1.5 -115
