Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs Seattle Seahawks Analysis
The Seattle Seahawks are one of the best stories in the NFL this season, and they look to continue their great season with a win against the Buccaneers.
Tampa Bay has struggled so far this season, but they got a much-needed win last week against the Rams. However, it was an ugly win, and the Rams are not good this season, so I am not too impressed.
On the other hand, the Seahawks are already outperforming everybody’s expectations and they look like a legitimate contender in the NFC. This is a huge matchup for both teams and this makes for one of the most interesting games on Sunday’s slate.
Seahawks Find Strong QB-RB Duo
When Seattle started this season hot, most pundits, myself included, thought it was a fluke. After some big wins but also uninspiring losses, this team has turned it around and they are looking like a team to beat in the NFC.
Seattle is currently 5th in the NFL in total DVOA, they are in first place in the NFC West, and they have a +21 point differential through 9 weeks.
Geno Smith, now paired with rookie phenom Ken Walker, has been an electric pairing for the Seahawks. Not to mention, Seattle’s offensive line, which is bookended by two rookie tackles, has been solid so far this year.
On a per-drive basis, Seattle is 22nd in time and 23rd in plays, yet they are 12th in yards in 6th in points. Seattle is 5th in third-down offense but only 26th in red zone offense. Smith averages 7.7 yards per attempt and he has been sacked 21 times so far this season.
On the defensive side of the ball, Seattle has improved every week of the season. This unit is not great, but it is quickly improving.
On a per-drive basis, Seattle is 25th in time, 28th in plays, 26th in yards, and 22nd in points. Seattle is 22nd in third-down defense and 23rd in red zone defense. The Seahawks are 4th in the NFL in sacks so far this year.
Despite being written off before the season started, Seattle is one of the better teams in the NFC and they should certainly make the playoffs and be a tough out. Seattle, and Geno Smith, are for real.
Bucs Must Bring Back Run Game
Unlike Seattle, Tampa Bay had sky-high pre-season expectations, but they have failed to come close to that level of play.
Tampa Bay had to deal with a ton of injuries in training camp, and more throughout the season, and they have not done a good job getting back on their feet.
Fortunately for them, they are in the NFC South so they still have a great shot of winning the division, but the Buccaneers need to win this game in Germany.
Tom Brady and co. are off to start the year, but Brady himself still looks good. He is slinging it all over the field and he looks close to his normal self.
The biggest issue for Brady is his banged-up offensive line and receiver corps. Brady has been sacked just 14 times, but his receivers have not done him any favors. On a per-drive basis, this Buc’s offense, which was dynamic last season, is 28th in drive time, 11th in plays, 20th in yards, and 25th in points.
Their run game is non-existent and Brady has not been on the same page with his weapons on the outside. To make matters worse, Tampa Bay is 23rd in third-down percentage and 30th in the red zone.
The Buccaneers’ defense has been amazing the past two seasons, but due to injuries, this unit is not the same this year. The Bucs used to have the best run defense, but now teams are having success on the ground against them.
However, that is not to say this unit still isn’t good, because it is. On a per-drive basis, Tampa Bay is 17th in drive time, 7th in plays, 4th in yards, and 6th in points. However, they are 18th on third down and 25th in red zone defense.
The Buccaneers need more out of both their offense and defense to make a push in the NFC. As it stands right now, while the Bucs can win the NFC South, they do not look like one of the best teams in the NFC.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs Seattle Seahawks Prediction
This is a must-win game for Tampa, but that does not mean they are a lock to win this football game. This line has moved in the Buccaneers’ favor, leading me to believe sharp money is on Tampa Bay. However, I am struggling to see what they are seeing.
Seattle, at this point in time, is simply the better team. Their offense is more dynamic and their defense has been more opportunistic. I am not sure how Seattle is not favored here, and two and a half points seem like a gift.
Prediction: Seattle Seahawks +2.5 -110
