Fresno State at New Mexico Analysis
Fresno State is set to take on the Lobo’s of New Mexico on their home court in this Mountain West conference match-up.
Both of these teams sit outside the top-5 in the conference standings, but Fresno State still is fighting for a position in March Madness with a 17-10 record.
Fresno State has held the head to head advantage in recent years, and they look to continue the trend as they continue their journey towards March Madness.
Lobos Losing Their Minds
New Mexico has had their struggles this season. They have finally hit the double digit win marker on the season, with their 10-17 record, but they have struggled (to say the least) on the road and against conference opponents.
The Lobo’s have won just two games, of their 11, on the road this season, on top of a 4-11 conference record this season.
Their offense has averaged 74 PPG on the season, while the defense has allowed over 77, but things have been a little different in the recent games. New Mexico has averaged just 62 PPG in the last four games, stemming from a shooting percentage of under 40% in three consecutive games.
The defense on the other hand, has allowed the opposition to shot over 52% in three of the last four games. The combination of these units has resulted in a 2-15 record against teams in KenPom’s top-150 overall, and posting just two wins against teams that rank in the top 100 defensively.
In the last two seasons, New Mexico is 7-23 on the money line against teams that are committing 14 or less TO’s per game, while also posting a record of 2-10 on the money line when playing with 1 or less days rest.
Fresno State Trying to Figure it Out On Offense
Fresno State has relied heavily on the play of their defense this season, but it has proven to work to an extent. Fresno is 17-10 on the season, but just 7-7 in the conference.
They have held opponents to under 58 PPG, yet they have played the slightly easier schedule. That play has been even better on their home court, they are 11-4 on the season, holding their opponents to just over 56 points, while the offense has posted nearly 66 points.
Fresno has held the opposition to just 38.8% shooting on their home court, even after dropping two straight games at home.
They started the year 11-2 straight up at home, but even a 11-4 record is nothing to be upset about. Fresno State has had one of their first rough stretches this season in the last five games, they have posted just 55 PPG in the last five and won just one game out of the five, including back-to-back losses at home.
Their last five games have been a slightly harder stretch in comparison to New Mexico, but they hold a definitive advantage head-to-head, cashing in on five of the six games in the last three seasons and winning eight of the 11 meetings on their home court dating back to 1997.
Regardless of the opponent, in the last two seasons Fresno State is 12-2 on the money line against teams under .500 and 16-3 on the money line as a favorite!
Fresno State at New Mexico Prediction
The defensive play of Fresno is huge, and the teams have combined for 12 straight games under the total. New Mexico is 5-10 OU against conference opponents, and Fresno is 4-11 OU at home this season.
Prediction: Under 134.5
