Wyoming vs San Diego State Analysis
In their only meeting this season, San Diego State travels to Laramie to take on Wyoming.
Something has to give here as the Cowboys bring in their top rated offense in conference play against a defense in San Diego State that not only ranks first in adjusted defensive efficiency in conference play but nationally as well.
They allow only 57 points per game on the season as Wyoming will have to turn on the jets for this one if they want to score over 65 in this one.
Both teams are 7-2 in their last nine, but Wyoming has the better chance to win the Mountain West Conference regular season title standing only 1.5 games out of leaders Boise State where San Diego State sits three games out.
Cowboys Closing in on Mountain West Conference Leaders
The Cowboys roll out a highly effective team on defense themselves ranking 76th nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency.
That includes playing stout defense against the three pointer as they rank 13th overall in three point field goal percentage against. What’s funny about Wyoming is they shoot it well inside the arch at 56.4% (13th nationally) but only 49% of their total points come from there which is 234th.
When they do go inside though it’s to sophomore forward Graham Ike who averages over 20 points and almost 10 rebounds per game while shooting over 53% from the field.
They’re led by senior guard Hunter Maldonado who is great overall averaging over 19 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists per game while chipping in a steal per game on the defensive end as well. His assists per game rank sixth overall nationally among players.
San Diego State Astounding on Defense
The Aztecs tend to have their offensive struggles at times as they score almost 10 points per game on average less than the Cowboys.
They’re #1 adjusted defensive efficiency stems from forcing their opponents to hold the ball on offense as long as possible before getting off a highly contested shot late in the shot clock.
They rank in the top 100 in three point shooting percentage but rank 330th in three pointers attempted per game.
If they want to win this one on the road, they’ll have to get out of their comfort zone and put up a few more effective three pointers. In their four conference losses they’ve averaged only 52 points as a team and two of those losses were by one point.
When they’re clicking on offense it’s likely due to the play of senior guard Matt Bradley who leads the Aztecs in scoring at 16.7 PPG. Inside they rely on senior forward Nathan Mensah who averages over seven points, seven rebounds and two blocks per game while shooting at over 49%.
Wyoming vs San Diego State Prediction
The spread for this one currently favors the Aztecs as two point road favorites heading into Wyoming.
With the Cowboys luck rating sitting at 26th best in the nation and playing on a top 50 home court according to KenPom I have to favor them in this one.
Another aspect we can look at is against the spread records in which Wyoming is 16-9-2 and San Diego State is 14-11. With San Diego State’s lack of scoring in losses and with the over/under at 129.5 I’d consider rolling with the under as well.
Prediction: Wyoming +2 / Under 129.5
