Rhode Island vs Dayton Analysis
The Flyers currently sit one game back of Davidson in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings and look to get a little bit closer as they head to Rhode Island tonight to take on the Rams. Rhode Island had hoped for a better year, but as of today sit with a 4-7 conference record which is 5.5 games back of Davidson.
The Rams had actually gotten off to a good start in conference play going 3-1 but they are just 1-6 in their last seven. Besides their loss to UMass, all of their conference losses have been by single digits proving that the Rams aren’t as bad of a team as their record shows.
Their most recent game was actually a home win against Davidson handing the Wildcats only their second conference loss. Can they keep that momentum going against the Flyers tonight?
Rhode Island Rim Protectors
If there are two aspects of the game the Rams lack most it’s free throw shooting and taking care of the ball. They rank 314th in turnover percentage and shoot it at just over 64% from the free throw line which is good for 348th in the country.
Overall on defense the Rams are solid ranking in the top 50 in adjusted defensive efficiency and second in the nation in block percentage.
Star center Makhel Mitchell actually ranks 16th overall individually in the nation in blocks per game at 2.8. When opponents do get up shots they’re likely ineffective as the Rams rank in the top 20 in effective field goal percentage allowed at just over 45%.
One would think Rhode Island should shoot the three pointer more often as they rank 78th overall in three point percentage, but the Rams only shoot it deep 15 times per game.
The Rams need to be a little better on offense in general if they’re going to come away with their second consecutive upset by moving the ball and getting open shots. They don’t have a player on their roster who averages more than three assists per game.
Dayton Full of Diaper Dandies
The Rams can take advantage of the Flyers through their lack of experience as Dayton rosters the youngest roster in the nation.
Obviously with that inexperience comes tons of talent including freshmen trio of DaRon Holmes II, Malachi Smith and Kobe Elvis. Overall the Flyers roster consists of 11 Freshmen.
Dayton quickly had to find an identity and out of the gate they didn’t have it going 1-3 including bad losses to Lipscomb, Austin Peay and UMass-Lowell.
Since then though, Dayton is 16-5 with big wins over Kansas, Belmont, Miami (FL) and Virginia Tech, proving to themselves they can handle any competition that comes their way, especially as we head into March.
Playing at a very slow pace, the Flyers win games generating open and makeable shots as they rank 81st in adjusted offensive efficiency and 32nd in effective field goal percentage.
Rhode Island vs Dayton Prediction
The Flyers sport a top 100 team in the country in terms of height which will be a big factor attacking the rim against a Rams team that knows how to defend it quite effectively.
I expect Dayton to try and get Mitchell in foul trouble forcing Rhode Island to limit his game time and his ability to defend the basket. I expect this game to stay close for a decent amount of time but eventually the Flyers pull away with a big road win.
Prediction: Dayton -2
