Shohei Ohtani
Shohei Ohtani currently leads the odds for the AL MVP, which shouldn’t be a big surprise, when you talk about the most valuable player to a team, it is hard to argue against Ohtani as he seemingly can do it all for the Angels.
Not to mention Ohtani is the reigning MVP from a season ago in the American League. He is a top-tier pitcher, as well as possessing a lethal bat on the offensive side.
While his offense has taken a small step backwards to start this season, hitting just .211, he still finds himself with 3 HR’s early in the year and sitting in the top 50 in the MLB with 9 RBI’s.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Vladamir Guerrero Jr arguably could have been the MVP last season, Ohtani took the title by a landslide, but statistically there could have been an argument made for Vlad.
This year, Guerrero looks to bring home the 2nd MVP title to his family, seeing as his dad took the MVP trophy home in the 2004 season.
Guerrero has came out hot, and shown a lot of people right off the rip why he should be in every conversation for the title this season.
He is currently hitting .344, 15th in the MLB currently, and not only is he getting on base, but his OPS is through the roof at 1.023.
He is vital to this Blue Jays team, posting a 1.0 WAR, and he has been one of the biggest scoring threats in the league, hitting 5 dingers already, helping him drive in 12 RBI’s early in this season, the 12th most in the league.
All this offensive production has put the Blue Jays in a position to have the best record in the AL, and they sit atop one of the most difficult divisions in baseball.
Mike Trout
As I mentioned in the NL portion of this article, Mike Trout finds himself with impressive company when you look at the active players that have won multiple MVP trophies, joining future Hall of Fame inductees Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols, and Bryce Harper.
Trout took the title in the American League in 2019 and 2016 but he has continued his old dominant ways this season. Trout is hitting .326 in this young season, smacking 4 HR’s thus far, propelling his OPS to a mind-blowing 1.132, 4th best in the league.
Even though Trout may not be in his “prime” anymore, he still ranks 13th in WAR, with a 1.1, proving age is just a number and he continues to be a vital piece of the Angels organization.
Byron Buxton
Byron Buxton hasn’t be a name that has consistently been in the MVP discussion in recent years, but he is off to one of the hottest start in baseball.
He leads the league in HR’s, smashing 6 long balls already, and we haven’t even hit May. That has helped him secure a spot in the top 20 with 11 RBI’s and proving how essential he is to this team with a WAR of 1.2.
The Twins currently sit atop the standings in a weak AL Central, but Buxton can take a good chunk of the offensive credit that has pushed this team to the top of their division.
Jose Ramirez
Another team coming out of the AL Central is the Jose Ramirez led Guardians. The Guardians are just behind the Twins, just as Jose Ramirez is right behind behind Byron Buxton in the current odds for the MVP.
Ramirez has had one of the most impressive starts that we have seen, the Guardians came out as one of the hottest offensive teams in the league thus far, and most of the run support has had something to do with Jose Ramirez.
He is currently batting .350, with the 6th best OPS in the league, 1.087. He has demolished 4 HR’s, while leading the league with 20 RBI’s, and ranking in the top 25 in WAR.
Wander Franco
Hard to believe this season’s list of MVP odds includes a player that was born this century. Wander Franco was hardly alive to see Vladamir Guerrero’s dad win his MVP title, seeing as he was 3 years old back in 2004.
He has proved that age is just a number, in terms of WAR, he ranks 3rd in the league, proving how vital he is to this Rays team and how devastating it would be to lose a player of his caliber at such a young age.
He has already blasted 3 HRs this season, driving in 10 runs for the Rays, and posting an OPS of .999! The Ray’s may be 3rd in the division currently, but Franco has the 2nd best odds in the AL East to walk away with a MVP title this season.
