Juan Soto
The NL MVP chase seems to be led by 23 year-old Juan Soto. Even though Washington has found themselves struggling as a team to start the year, posting a record of 6-12, the 2nd worst record in the National League.
The Nationals outfielder has still found a way to make a name for himself again this season. Soto is hitting .242, but he sits near the top with 3 HR’s (4th most in the league) and a 1.0 WAR (wins above replacement – #14th), while also sitting in the top 50 in OPS (.841).
Francisco Lindor
Francisco Lindor has seemingly made a better name for himself in New York. After many impressive seasons in Cleveland, Lindor had a less than impressive year last year, in his first season with the Mets.
Now, Lindor has helped lead the way for a Mets team that holds the best record in the MLB winning 13 of their 18 games thus far. Lindor has blasted 3 HRs already (4th in the league), helping him drive in 12 RBI’s (#12 in the MLB), and making him one of the most essential players in the league with a 1.2 WAR.
He is hitting nearly .300, putting him in the top 50 in batting average in the league, but he has found a way to get on base, and hit for power with the 28th best OPS in the league, .917.
Bryce Harper
Bryce Harper, like Francisco Lindor, is beginning to look even more comfortable in his new home. While Philadelphia isn’t quite as new as New York is for Lindor, people still seem to remember his years in Washington, just as he does, I am sure.
Last season, Harper hit over .300 for just the 3rd season in his career, and while he is hitting just .231 at this point in the season, he ranks in the top 10 in both HRs & RBIs.
He has been one of the main run providers for this Phillies team that sits smack dab in the middle of the NL East at 7-10. He also joins Mike Trout, Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols as the only current players with multiple MVP trophies entering this season, walking away with his 2nd MVP trophy last year.
Trea Turner
Next on the list for the NL odds is another face that is getting accustomed to a new home. Trea Turner is in his first full season with the Dodgers and he hasn’t skipped a beat.
Turner hit .348 last season with the Dodgers and he hit .328 during the entirety of the 2021 season. So far this season his batting average has gotten off to a “slow” start, hitting .277, but he still finds himself as a main contributor to a Dodgers team that leads the NL West.
Turner has driven in 15 runs so far this season, leading the team and ranking 5th in the league.
Nolan Arenado
Arenado is yet another name that is relatively new to his team, this is his 2nd season in St. Louis, but he is off to one of his hottest starts in his career and is on pace to shatter his personal records.
Arenado ranks 20th in batting average in this young season, hitting .339! Not only has he been putting the bat on the ball, but he has been getting work done at the same time.
He ranks 2nd in the MLB in HRs with 5, which has helped him rank 7th in RBIs, driving in 14 runs on the season. His OPS is 1.078, and while it is still early, his career average is .882. No matter what sport you are talking about and who the candidates are, when it comes to the MVP there is always one big debate, should the winner be the best player in the league, or the player that is the most valuable for their team?
If you are talking about most valuable for a team, at this point, it is hard to argue against Arenado being at the top of the list with a 1.4 WAR to go alongside his stats, that’s the 2nd highest WAR in the MLB.
Freddie Freeman
Freeman is yet again another name on this NL list that is getting their footing in a new home. Freeman has only just begun his journey with the Dodgers, but alongside Turner and others, he has helped propel this team back into 1st place in a difficult NL West division.
While Freeman is sitting just behind Turner in RBI’s, he leads the team in batting average, hitting .328, good enough for the 25th best average in the league. He has blasted 3 HR’s on the season and has drove in 9 runs himself in just 16 games.
Freeman also ranks in the top 25 in OPS and is in the top 50 in WAR, backing how essential this new addition has been to the Dodgers team. Freeman joins Bryce Harper as the only other player (that currently sits in the top-8 of Draft King’s odds) that has already won himself a MVP trophy, taking the title in 2020.
Matt Olson
No surprise here, yet another player that has found himself on a new team this season, but is still in serious contention for a potential NL MVP trophy at the conclusion of this year.
Matt Olson finds himself in serious playoff contention, a step up from the Athletics team that he started his career with.
The Braves are now 8-10, but Matt Olson is quietly leading the charge in the offense during the absence of Acuna Jr. Olson is 7th in the league currently with a batting average of .355, he has just 2 HRs thus far in the season, but he sits at #10 in the league in OPS, posting a 1.041!
He has consistently found himself on the base path, with hard hit balls, and he has a 1.0 WAR, 16th in the MLB currently.
