Boston Red Sox vs Toronto Blue Jays Analysis
On Thursday night, the Blue Jays and the Red Sox face off for the third game of a three-game series. The Blue Jays won games one and two, and they lead the season series 12-3 against Boston this year.
Toronto has an eight-game lead over Boston in the AL East and in the Wild Card. The Blue Jays are -170 road favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is set at 9 runs.
Gausman Good To Go On Road
Toronto has had its ups and downs this season, but the Blue Jays currently hold one of the AL’s Wild Card spots. Toronto is 6-4 in their last 10 games and they have been beating AL East rivals during this stretch. The Blue Jays are 67-55, they are 31-30 on the road, and they are 37-63 covering the run line as a favorite this season.
Kevin Gausman will make the start for Toronto at Fenway tonight. Gausman, in 23 starts, is 9-9 with a 2.99 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP, and a 2.06 FIP. In his last three starts, Gausman has allowed five runs on 19 hits over 17.2 innings of work.
This will be his fifth time facing the Red Sox this season. In games Gausman has pitched against Boston, the Blue Jays are 4-0 and he did not allow a run in two of his four starts against the Sox.
On the road this season, Gausman has a 1.65 ERA, a .297 slugging percentage against, a .222 batting average against, a 1.71 FIP, and a .99 WHIP. He has been equally as good all three times through a batting order and he is one of the more underrated pitchers in the MLB this season.
Red Sox Need Late Season Rally
The Red Sox cannot put together a solid stretch of wins, and they are now seven games out of the Wild Card in the AL. Boston is 60-64 overall, 29-32 at home, and they are 34-25 covering the run line as an underdog.
In 15 games against the Blue Jays, the Sox have covered the run line in eight of them, but they have only beaten Toronto three times with two of the wins coming up North.
Kutter Crawford will make the start for the Sox tonight at Fenway. Crawford has appeared in 19 games but he has become a starter as of late. On the season, Crawford has pitched 68.1 innings with a 5.14 ERA, a 4.35 FIP, and a 1.32 WHIP.
On 7/14, Crawford started against the Blue Jays at home and allowed three runs on five hits over six innings of work in a Red Sox loss. At home this season, Crawford has a 4.08 ERA, a .205 batting average against, a 4.71 FIP, and a 1.10 WHIP.
Boston Red Sox vs Toronto Blue Jays Prediction
Crawford has had a nice start to the season and Gausman has been great this year. Looking at these teams’ lineups, and how they have performed in August, I am expecting a bit of a pitcher’s duel today. I am looking at UNDER 8.5 runs for this matchup in Boston.
Prediction: Under 9 Total Runs Scored
