Miami Marlins vs Philadelphia Phillies Analysis
After a home series versus their divisional rival the New York Mets, the Phillies travel to Miami for a four-game series against another divisional rival. Philly lost their last two games vs the Mets after winning the first game.
Miami comes into this series after being swept by the Los Angeles Angels. The Marlins have their ace, Sandy Alcantara, on the bump, but oddsmakers have the Phillies as a slight favorite at -110. The Run line is -1.5 and the total is set at 7.5 runs.
Gibson Gashes Athletics in First Start
The Phillies lost their last series against the Mets and were fortunate to avoid a sweep. In the first game of that series, the Phillies scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to beat the Mets 5-4.
Without that one inning of mashing, the Phillies would have gone 0-3 vs the Mets, even with two of their top pitchers throwing.
Now, Philly will travel to Miami and trot out Kyle Gibson for the opener vs the Marlins. Gibson had a great first start this season vs the A’s. Gibson allowed just two hits over seven innings and had 10 strikeouts.
He will face a Miami offense that has a .199 batting average and has only produced 14 runs in five games, four losses.
Marlins Thankful to be Back in Miami
After a trip on the West Coast to start the season, the Marlins are finally back in Miami. The Marlins have been competitive so far this season, but it has not translated into wins.
Miami won their second game vs the Giants in their opening series, but they have dropped their last three games.
Miami will send ace Sandy Alcantara to the bump to take on the Phillies in the Marlins’ first taste of NL East action this season. Alcantara had a solid first start this season.
He allowed just two earned runs on just three hits, but he walked five batters in 5 innings. Alcantara will have to deal with a Phillies lineup that bats .237 with a .419 slugging percentage.
Miami Marlins vs Philadelphia Phillies Prediction
Boy, is this a tough game to handicap. The Phillies are the better team, but Alcantara is arguably the better starter.
The Marlins lineup is struggling, but maybe being back home will help them catch their stride. The Phillies have done a great job with the long ball and starting pitching, but their bullpen has not been great. So, given all this information, my lean is to take the Marlins moneyline at home.
Prediction: Miami Marlins Moneyline
BONUS: Miami Marlins vs Philadelphia Phillies Best Bet
I don’t love paying this much juice on a NRFI bet, but I see this being the outcome in this matchup. Both teams have starters going who did well minimizing runs in their last start.
The Phillies are a long-ball team, and I do not see anyone taking Alcantara yard in the first inning. On the other hand, the Marlins have flat out struggled on offense, and Kyle Gibson is coming off a masterful performance in his first start of the season. I think neither team generates a run in the first inning of this game.
Best Bet: No Run First Inning (-118)
