Starting Pitching: List Yamamoto and Gore
Home Plate Umpire: Brian Walsh has been assigned his 70th career home plate assignment. In Walsh's five home plate assignments this season the five have exceeded the game total. All five of his assignments behind the dish have gone final Over the Bookmakers closing number
Venue: Nationals Park in Washington, DC
Weather: The forecast for Nationals Park calls for first-pitch temps in the upper-50s with no precipitation expected. A slight ENE breeze blows in from right centerfield between 4-and-8 mph.
The hometown starter, MacKenzie Gore, was awarded the start in the Nats season home opener. Gore was selected to pitch in front of the sellout crowd of 40,405 at Nationals Park. Four days after Josiah Gray took the mound in the 2024 season opener in Cincinnati.
Gore’s average fastball velocity sat just over 95 mph in the home opener. His swinging-strike rate has increased since his work last season to 12 percent. Gore has trimmed his contact rate from 77.5% to just under 75% and comes into this start vs the Dodgers with a 37% hard-hit rate.
The long ball was an issue last season (1.78 HR/9 and 18% HR/FB) and will be something to watch this season. He has not allowed a home run in his last two turns, at Oakland and vs Houston. Gore's work in spring training yielded mixed results, with a 5.87 ERA, 11.2 K/9, 3.5 BB/9, and 3.86 xFIP across 15.1 IP. Gore started the season 2-0 surrendering five runs with 23 strikeouts against five walks across three starts and 15.1 innings of work.
His last start, a loss at home vs the Astros, found Gore lasting just four innings allowing three runs on seven hits with just four strikeouts against one walk.
The 25-year-old Gore found his first fastball of the season clocked at 97.3 mph. His top end was recorded at 98.6 mph in the at-bat with Connor Joe which resulted in a popout. The southpaw averaged 97.0 mph with his four-seamer, up two ticks from last season but his opening start on April 1st resulted in a Nationals’ 8-4 loss to the Pirates. He allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while recording six strikeouts across 5 1/3 innings.
Gore tossed 5.0 innings of shutout ball on a mid-April Saturday night in Oakland. He took full advantage of the hapless A's lineup, racking up 11 Ks and producing 20 swings and misses. The hard-throwing southpaw had produced an impressive 12.94 K/9 heading into his last turn, a loss to the Strohs, still more of a flyball pitcher (groundball percentage of 32.1%), and his 14.3% Barrel% ranks in the 9th percentile.
In 16 plate appearances vs the Astros last season Gore struck out only two and walked two and that showed in his last turn against the Astros in which, as noted, he lasted only four innings that took 92 pitches to complete.
He closed the 2023 campaign with a start against the Dodgers at Nationals Park pitching four innings and surrendering four runs on six hits while striking out four against two walks. He allowed three home runs to the Dodgers that Friday night. The trio of J.D. Martinez, Max Muncy, and Enrique Hernandez all went deep.
The September start last season was his only start against the Dodgers. His first start vs Los Angeles came in 2022, a Fourth of July Weekend outing in which Gore received a no-decision in which he walked (4) Dodgers while striking out only three. Gore has yet to record a decision in his two starts against the Dodgers and has as many walks allowed as strikeouts with three home runs in nine innings of work.
The Achilles of Gore in his promising but still adolescent career has been facing lineups that are experienced and savvy at the plate, patient if you will. That describes the Dodgers and the combination of a home plate umpire that doesn't call strikes outside of the league Kzone makes this a difficult task for Gore and his teammates.
When Freddie Freeman spoke with the media following last Friday night's loss to the Mets, a Yamamoto start, he told the press “We just didn’t play good tonight. That was just not a good game. If we just play better baseball, we’re going to win. Our team is way too good. I think we all know that and I think we’re going to be just fine soon.”
At the time Freeman challenged his teammates with his speech to the press the Dodgers had lost four of five games and five of their past seven. The Dodgers lost the following night to the Mets 6-4 in a game that the defense cost them runs against the Mets. The bullpen continued to be unreliable and the starting pitching had been spotty. Furthermore, the offense had been highlighted by individual triumphs but bunching hits and taking opposing pitching staffs to task had not lived up to the Spring Training hype.
The Dodgers enter this afternoon tilt in the nation's capital winners of three straight. LA won the third of the three-game set against the Mets 10-0 and has followed that up by taking down the Nationals two straight with 4-1 and 11-2 final scores.
The slow start for the highest-paid pitcher in baseball has begun to pick up steam. Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s strikeout totals at sportsbook portals like DraftKings have begun to climb and Yamamoto has answered the bell. Yamamoto has now had at least eight strikeouts in two of his last three starts. Yamamoto's swing-and-miss stuff has been stupid-good as of late and while the Nationals are not a completely undisciplined team at the plate they have not seen Yamamoto and figure to be overwhelmed in the first half of today's game.
Of the Nationals who are the free swingers the likes of Joey Gallo, Eddie Rosario, Riley Adams, and Nick Senzel figure to be lost at the plate in their first at-bats against the Japanese import.
