Cincinnati Reds vs New York Mets Analysis
On Tuesday night, the Mets and the Reds face off for the second game of a three-game series. The Mets took home the road win last night 7-4 behind a great start from Taijuan Walker and steady offensive output throughout the game.
New York Mets
The Mets had a solid June, but their lead in the NL East was cut to just 3.5 games by the surging Braves. The Mets are 50-30 on the season and they are 24-17 on the road and 32-25 covering the run line as a favorite. New York is 5-5 in the last 10 games with a .224 batting average and they have been outscored by six runs during this stretch.
Max Scherzer will make his first start since coming off the injured list tonight against the Reds on the road. Scherzer, before the injury, was 5-1 in eight starts with a 2.54 ERA, a 2.95 FIP, and a .95 WHIP. On the road this year, Scherzer has a 2.63 ERA, a 2.45 FIP, and a 1.04 WHIP. In his last start, Scherzer allowed two runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings before being taken out with an injury. The Reds have a team OPS of .671 against righties and a .748 OPS at home this season.
Cincinnati Reds
The Reds are one of the worst teams in baseball and they have been struggling all year. Cincinnati is in last place in the NL Central with a 27-52 record. They are 13-26 at home this season and they are 29-34 covering the run line as underdogs. The Reds are 4-6 in their last 10 games and they have been outscored by 22 runs during this stretch.
Rookie Nick Lodolo will make the start for the Reds at home tonight against the Mets. Lodolo has made three starts this season and he has allowed nine runs and 18 hits with 19 strikeouts over 14.2 innings of work. Lodolo has looked great in his three starts but all three were in April. He missed May and June with a back injury and he is making his first start since. The Mets have a team OPS of .728 on the road and a .702 OPS against lefties this season.
Cincinnati Reds vs New York Mets Prediction
The Mets do not do well seeing a pitcher for the first time and Lodolo has been good in his young MLB career. It will be interesting to see how he fares against a strong Mets lineup that does not strike out a lot and gets on base. Both pitchers are coming off IL stints, but, as a veteran, we know what to expect from Scherzer. The Mets should pull out this win and I would take them on the run line.
PLAY: Mets -1.5 (-130)
