Justin Verlander
Justin Verlander is the only pitcher in the top 6 in the odds in the American League that has already secured multiple Cy Young trophies in his career.
Verlander is searching for his 3rd Cy Young, with the most recent title coming in 2019 after a 7 year span following his first Cy Young award back in 2011!
Now he is leading the way for a Houston Astros team that possess the 2nd best record in the American League and their 23-12 record is tied for the lead in the AL West. Houston has won 5 of Verlander’s 7 starts thus far this season, helping him secure the league lead in wins, 5, among pitchers.
He ranks 5th in the league securing quality starts in 5 of his 7 appearances this season, including one of the most impressive performances this season by a starting pitcher going 8 hit-less innings against Minnesota.
On the season, Verlander has posted an ERA of just 1.38, the 5th best in the league, and leads the league in WHIP among qualifying pitchers at 0.68!
While he is striking out just 8.1 batters per 9 innings (31st in the league), he is still 3rd in the MLB in WAR among pitchers at +1.8, which has helped him secure the top spot in the odds for the American League Cy Young.
Kevin Gausman
After an impressive season in San Francisco, Kevin Gausman has made his way up north, he has found a new home in Toronto and has made the most of his time so far in his 2nd stint in the American League.
Toronto currently sits at 18-17, winning 5 of Gausman’s 7 starts, which currently is the 3rd best record in the AL East behind New York and Tampa Bay.
Even though Toronto has won 5 of his starts, he still ranks just 25th in the league with 3 wins, but he has amounted 5 quality starts in his 7 attempts this season, which is 5th best in the league.
His 2.40 ERA is impressive and puts him 16th in the league, while his 0.98 WHIP ranks 15th in the league among qualifying pitchers. While that is all impressive, Gausman ranks in the top 10 in strikeouts per 9 innings, fanning 10.8 batters on average in the a 9 inning span!
Gerrit Cole
The 3rd best odds currently in the AL Cy Young is held by Gerrit Cole (+750), who is leading the charge for best team in the MLB at the moment. The New York Yankees have capitalized on 6 of Cole’s 7 starts this season, pulling out wins 86% of his starts on the season.
While the Yankees have won a majority of his starts, Cole has won 3 games this season, suggesting limited run support for the team, but he has registered quality starts in 4 out of his 7 chances.
Everything, records wise, aside, Cole has kept his ERA under 3.00, posting the 27th best ERA in the league at 2.95, and ranking 31st in WHIP at 1.12. The most impressive part of Cole’s season thus far has been his K/9 ranking, he currently is 4th in the league striking out 11.3 batters on average per 9 innings pitched!
Dylan Cease
Coming in 4th on the list is Chicago White Sox starter, Dylan Cease (+750). While Chicago is the only team with a pitcher in the top 6 that is under .500, their 16-17 record is still good enough to put them in 2nd in the AL Central, just 3 games back of the division leading Minnesota Twins.
Five of the teams 16 wins have come in Cease’s 7 starts, resulting in 3 winners for Dylan Cease on the season. He currently sits with an ERA of 3.55 (38th in the league), but he leads the league in K/9 innings, striking out 13.7 batters on average!
He currently has the 27th best WHIP in the league at 1.11, and his WAR is at +0.9, just below 1 and 40th in the league among pitchers. In his most recent start, Cease allowed 6 ER against the Yankees, just the 2nd time this season that he has allowed more than 2 runs in a start, going just 4 innings, his shortest start of the year.
While that has temporarily shifted his stats, there is plenty of time for Cease to bounce back.
Shohei Ohtani
Next on the list is the name that everyone has loved to watch the last few years, Angels starter, Shohei “Showtime” Ohtani (+1000).
While he currently doesn’t qualify for the rankings among pitchers, seeing as he hasn’t pitched the minimum requirement of 1 IP/team game played, that doesn’t take away from the impressive year he is having on the mound.
He does qualify for the rankings when it comes to have 3 wins already on the season (25th in the league), and ranking 34th in quality starts, accomplishing that feat half of the times he took the mound (3 out of 6).
Regardless of his innings pitched, Ohtani has still posted a 2.78 ERA on the season, held his WHIP under 1.00 (0.96) and has struck out 12.8 batters per 9 innings, which (if qualified) would put him 4th in the current rankings!
On both sides of the ball, offensively and on the mound, Ohtani has helped lift this Angels team to a 24-13 record, which has them tied for the lead in the AL West with Houston and up 7 games on the next closest divisional rival.
Shane McClanahan
Rounding out the top 6 in the American League Cy Young odds is the 3rd pitcher on the list from the AL East, this time for Tampa Bay, Shane McClanahan.
The similarities between these pitchers seem to be the rankings in K/9, with McClanahan following suit, ranking 2nd in the league at 13.3 strikeouts per 9 innings on average.
Not only is he near the top of the list in strikeouts, but he also ranks 8th in WHIP, posting a 0.92, putting himself among the limited qualifying pitchers below a 1.00.
McClanahan may only have 2 wins, but he has posted 3 quality starts and the Rays are 4-3 in his 7 starts, helping push them to the 2nd best record in the AL East at 22-15 (5.5 GB of NYY). That could be due in part to an ERA in the top 20 in the league at 2.52, even with limited run support and a WAR of +0.8.
