Cardinals vs Brewers Analysis
On Thursday night, the Brewers and the Cardinals square off for the first game of a four-game series. The Brewers are coming off a 2-1 series win against the Padres in San Diego.
The Cardinals are coming off a series split against the Blue Jays at home. This is the fifth time these two teams have met this season and the season series is split 2-2. The Cardinals are -115 home favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is set at 7.5 runs.
Brewers Preview
The Brewers are 28-16 and are currently in first place in the NL Central. The Brewers are powered by their pitching staff and they have the second-best FIP in baseball (3.24).
Milwaukee has won seven of their last 10 games and has outscored opponents by 11 runs during that stretch of games.
Lefty Eric Lauer will make the start for the Brewers tonight. Lauer has made seven starts so far this season and is pitching to a tune of a 2.16 ERA, 3.36 FIP, and a .255 batting average on balls in play.
Lauer leaves 92.7% of runners on the basepaths which is well above the Major League average. In his last start against the Nationals, Lauer went seven innings allowing no runs and just five hits.
Cardinals Preview
The St. Louis Cardinals are currently in 2nd place in the NL Central and are staring up at the Brewers. The Brewers have a 3.5-game lead over the Cardinals, so if the Cardinals can pull off the sweep, they will take over first place. St. Louis is 11-9 at home this season and is 6-4 in their last 10 games.
Veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright will make the start for the Cardinals tonight at home. Wainwright pitched against the Brewers on 4/14 and allowed four runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work.
On the season, Wainwright has a 2.87 ERA, a 3.84 FIP, and has left 81.3% of runners on base. Wainwright is 10th in the MLB in hard-hit ball percentage with just 24.4% of batted balls being hit hard.
Cardinals vs Brewers Prediction
While Eric Lauer had a good start his last time out, his previous start against the Marlins did not go so well. Overall, Lauer has been dependable this season, but he certainly is not a lock to have a great game.
Wainwright has been solid for most of the season and has now allowed more than four runs in a game. I am riding with the home favorite, the Cardinals, to take the win tonight. For a 5% MLB play of the month, check out my handicapper profile on Sportsmemo.
Prediction: St. Louis Cardinals Moneyline -115
