Houston Astros vs New York Yankees Game 1 Analysis
On Wednesday night, the Astros and the Yankees face off for the first game of the ALCS. The Yankees beat the Guardians last night in game 5 behind some great pitching and timely home runs.
The Astros swept the Mariners and they have not played in three days. In the regular season, the Astors won the season series 5-2 and both of the Yankee wins came in the Bronx. For this matchup, the Astros are -195 favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is seven runs scored.
Taillon Takes Mound For Game 1
It was not a pretty series, but the Yankees persevered and won in five games. This Yankee team is certainly flawed, but when their pitching staff is doing well and they are able to hit more than solo home runs, this team can squeeze out victories.
New York was only an underdog 14 times in the regular season and they went 10-4 covering the run line as dogs this year.
Jameson Taillon will make the start for the Yankees tonight in Houston. One of the downfalls of going to 5 games in the ALDS means the Yankees are more strapped for pitching. Taillon pitched in relief in game three against the Guardians and allowed two runs on three hits and he did not record a single out.
On the road this season, Taillon had a 4.36 ERA, a .245 batting average against, a .447 slugging percentage against, a 4.65 FIP, and a 1.12 WHIP. Despite these shaky splits, the Yankees went 4-1 in his last five road starts on the season.
Verlander Very Eager To Bounce Back
The Astros made quick work of the Mariners in the ALDS, but that does not mean it wasn’t an exciting series. Houston won game one in walk-off fashion, game two was close, and game three came down to the 18th inning.
This Astros team has been recognized as the best team in the AL all season long, and now is their chance to prove that and make the World Series.
Justin Verlander will make the start at home for the Astros against the Yankees. In his first postseason start this year, Verlander allowed six runs on 10 hits in just four innings of work. Verlander was not sharp by any stretch, but luckily for him his teammates picked him up and they were able to get the win.
At home this season, Verlander has a 1.64 ERA, a .201 batting average against, a .269 slugging percentage against, a 1.70 FIP, and a .69 WHIP. In order to beat the Yankees today, Verlander needs to minimize the long ball and keep the Yankees off the base paths.
Houston Astros vs New York Yankees Prediction
Laying -195 in October baseball is impossible for me. When trying to find an angle on this game, I immediately am looking at the two starters.
Both pitchers have had problems allowing runs lately and neither pitcher seem to be on their A-game. I expect this series to come out hot. I like over 3.5 runs in the first five innings of this game.
Prediction: Over 3.5 Runs Scored First Five +105
