New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels Analysis
On Monday night, the Yankees travel to Los Angeles to take on the Angels in the first game of a three-game series. The Yankees are coming off a 2-2 split against the A’s, and the Angels are coming off a sweep of the Blue Jays on the road.
The Yankees lead the season series 3-0. For this matchup, the Yankees are -190 road favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is 8 runs.
Frankie Figuring it Out With Yankees
The Yankees have struggled mightily since the trade deadline, but they still have a comfortable lead in the AL East. New York is just 5-5 in their last 10 games and they have a .229 team batting average during that stretch. This season, the Yankees are 33-30 on the road and they are 49-70 covering the run line as a favorite.
Frankie Montas, one of the Yankees’ trade deadline acquisitions, will make the start for New York tonight. Since joining the Yankees, Montas has had a rough go.
In his four starts in pinstripes, Montas has allowed 16 runs on 24 hits over 19 innings. The Yankees are 2-2 in these games. On 5/21, Montas pitched against the Angels for the A’s, and he allowed one hit in 1.2 innings before he was pulled with a minor injury. Montas has been worse on the road all season long.
In 34 innings on the road, Montas has a 5.82 ERA, a .447 slugging percentage against, a .273 batting average against, a 4.24 FIP, and a 1.32 WHIP. Montas was rocked in his first road start as a Yankee, but he had a solid second road outing against the Red Sox.
Suarez Struggles at Home
The Angels are one of the most disappointing teams in baseball this season, but that does not mean they can’t play spoiler for other teams looking to make a stretch run.
The Angels swept the Blue Jays in their last series, and if they beat the Yankees, they can seriously hurt their lead in the AL East. Los Angeles is 4-6 in their last 10 games, they are 26-36 at home, and they are 31-28 covering the run line as an underdog this season.
Lefty Jose Suarez will make the start for the Yankees tonight. On the season, Suarez is 4-6 with a 4.19 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP, and a 4.19 FIP. In his last three starts, Suarez has allowed just six runs on 14 hits over 17.1 innings of work.
However, Suarez has had a rough going at home this year. In 33.2 innings at home, Suarez has a 4.81 ERA, a .420 slugging percentage against, a 1.34 WHIP, and a 4.22 FIP. The Angels are 4-4 in Suarez’s eight road appearances this season.
New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels Prediction
Looking at this matchup, I would look for a Mike Trout total bases angle. He has been slumping, but this is a good spot for him to jump all over Montas. Since Montas struggles on the road, I think Trout can capitalize and have himself a night.
Prediction: Mike Trout Over 1.5 total bases +120
