Miami Marlins vs Philadelphia Phillies Analysis
On Friday night, the Phillies head to Miami to take on the Marlins in the first game of a three-game series. The Phillies are coming off a lost series against the Blue Jays in Toronto and the Marlins are coming off a series split with the Pirates at home.
The Marlins lead this season series 4-2, and for this matchup, the Marlins are -165 home favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is 7 runs.
Phillies Falling Flat Before Break
The Phillies are on a four-game losing streak and they are 5-5 in their last 10 games. During this stretch, the Phillies have a team ERA of 2.93, but a .222 team batting average.
The Phillies are 9.5 games behind the Mets for first place in the NL East and they are 22-22 on the road and 21-11 on the run line as an underdog this season.
Kyle Gibson will make the start for the Phillies today in Miami. Gibson is 4-3 in 17 starts this season with a 4.53 ERA, a 4.33 FIP, and a 1.23 WHIP. In his last three starts, Gibson has allowed 11 runs on 13 hits over 13.2 innings of work.
On 6/15, he pitched against the Marlins at home and went eight innings allowing one run and seven hits. The Marlins are a better team at home this season and it will be interesting to see if Gibson can match that outing. On the road this season, Gibson has a 5.22 ERA, a 4.09 FIP, and a 1.41 WHIP.
Alcantara in True Ace Form
The Marlins are 2.5 games behind the Phillies for fourth place in the NL East standings. Miami is 43-45 on the season, they are 22-19 at home, and they are 12-25 covering the run line as a favorite. Miami is 5-5 in their last 10 games with a .201 team batting average and a 2.90 team ERA.
Sandy Alcantara, the best pitcher in the NL this season, will make the start for Miami at home. Alcantara is 9-3 in 18 starts with a 1.73 ERA, a 2.83 FIP, and a .91 WHIP.
On 6/13, Alcantara started against the Phillies on the road and allowed two runs on six hits in 7.2 innings of work. In 68 innings at home this season, Alcantara has a 1.59 ERA, a .271 slugging percentage against, a 2.86 FIP, and a .79 WHIP.
Miami Marlins vs Philadelphia Phillies Prediction
The Marlins are too big of a favorite to back since they are not reliable at favorites this season, but I cannot bet against Sandy shutting down the Phillies.
For this matchup, I am looking at the total of 7 and I believe this game will go under. The Marlins hit much better at home this season but they have been slumping and Gibson has been better on the road. Sandy has been Sandy this year, so I do not expect a lot of runs.
Prediction: Under 7 Runs Scored
