Angels vs Mariners Analysis
The Los Angeles Angels host the Seattle Mariners in Monday afternoon finale of their four-game set, and – believe it or not – are looking for the sweep, as they’ve won the first three games.
Seattle put up seven runs Friday night, but have had a power outage since then, scoring just one run each in the last two games. Logan Gilbert gets the start versus Jose Suarez, first pitch at Angels Stadium is scheduled for 4:07 PM EDT / 1:07 PM PDT.
Even with the recent downturn, the M’s still hold the final wild card berth. They’re 4.0 games ahead of the Orioles and 5.0 up on the White Sox with 17 left to play. And the Angels have been out of playoff contention for a long time, with a current record of 64-82.
Seattle Slinging it With Trio of Solid Starting Pitching
In just his second year in the bigs, Logan Gilbert has emerged as one of the top three starting pitchers for Seattle. In 29 starts and 166.2 innings, he’s put up a 3.29 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP with 156 strikeouts, allowing just 45 walks and 17 big flies.
The right-hander got roughed up in two starts with the Yankees in early August, but has pitched well since then. Gilbert has four quality starts in his last six outings, and a sterling 0.53 ERA in his three games in September.
The Mariners pitching staff is one of the best in baseball, and has carried the team most of 2022. With Gilbert, Robbie Ray and Luis Castillo, this starting trio is one of the best in MLB and can give them a chance to compete in a seven-game playoff series.
Although the Mariners have above average power numbers with the 10th most home runs in MLB, their weakness has been team batting average ranking a paltry 27th. Their strikeout rate is 16th lowest, so that’s not a huge problem – but they’ve had a problem making contact, and that’s been the cause of their hitting slumps this season.
Julio Rodriguez is a great player with a solid average of .279, but the talented rookie will need more higher-average help in 2023 if they want to go deep in the playoffs.
Los Angeles Looking For Long Ball to Carry Them
Jose Suarez has been bit by the injury bug this season, and hasn’t pitched a lot of games or innings. But he has gotten better as the season has progressed.
In his last 15 starts, he’s put up a 3.27 ERA and 1.15 WHIP – and in his last seven outings, he’s posted a 2.41 ERA and an excellent 1.02 WHIP. If he can stay healthy and maintain this level of performance next year, the southpaw could be a key part of the Halos’ starting rotation.
The Angels are a tough team to figure out, because they have two of the best players in baseball in Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani – but they haven’t made the postseason since 2014.
The biggest elephants in the room are the highest strikeout rate of any team in MLB, and 5th-worst team batting average plus an over-reliance on the long ball to produce runs. The front office and hitting coach will need to address these issues if this club wants to compete for the playoffs in 2023.
Angels vs Mariners Prediction
Seattle is too good of a team to drop four in a row late in the season, and Gilbert is in better current form than Suarez. It’s tricky to handicap games this time of year with all the young talent that every team is trying out.
That’s why I’d tread (and bet) lightly on this game, but we’re getting a good price with the Mariners, and that’s why I’ll lean towards Seattle on the moneyline.
Prediction: Seattle Mariners Moneyline
