St Louis Cardinals vs Philadelphia Phillies Analysis
On Friday night, the Phillies and Cardinals square off for the first game of a four-game series. The Phillies are coming off a 3-1 series win against the Nationals at home, and the Cardinals are coming off a 3-1 series loss against the Braves in Atlanta. This is the fourth time these two teams will meet this year and the Phillies lead the season series 2-1.
Phightin’ Phillies
The Phillies had a great month of June and they are looking to build off that momentum to gain some ground in the NL East standings. The Phillies are 44-39 and they are currently eight games behind the Mets for first place. Philadelphia is 6-4 in their last 10 games, they are 20-18 on the road, and they are 24-31 covering the run line as a favorite this season.
Zack Wheeler will make the start for the Phillies tonight against the Cardinals. Wheeler is 7-4 with a 2.66 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and a 2.48 FIP and the Phillies are 3-2 in his last five road starts. Wheeler’s last start was against the Cardinals at home and he allowed no runs on four hits through seven innings of work.
Wheeler has been a worse pitcher on the road this season. In 32.1 innings away from Philly, Wheeler has a 4.45 ERA, a .455 slugging percentage against, a 1.45 WHIP, and a 2.67 FIP. The Cardinals have a .746 team OPS at home this season and a .711 OPS against righties.
The ‘Wright Stuff
The Cardinals are just 2.5 games behind the Brewers for first place in the NL Central and they are looking to make up ground. St. Louis is 4-6 in their last 10 games and they have been outscored by six runs during this stretch. The Cardinals are 24-16 at home and they are 23-19 covering the run line as an underdog this season.
Veteran Adam Wainwright will make the start for the Cardinals tonight at home. Wainwright is 6-6 on the season with a 3.26 ERA, a 3.54 FIP, and a 1.27 WHIP. Wainwright’s last start was on the road in Philadelphia and he allowed four runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings of work in a loss.
The Cardinals are 3-1 in his last four home starts and he pitches to the tune of a 2.25 ERA, a 2.56 FIP, and a 1.14 WHIP at home. The Phillies have a .727 OPS against righties this season and a .742 OPS on the road.
St Louis Cardinals vs Philadelphia Phillies Prediction
I believe this game is very fairly priced and I like the outlook for both teams tonight. Wheeler is worse on the road but he still puts up great numbers, and Wainwright has been great at home.
Neither team is truly slumping or truly hot at the moment, so this game should certainly come down to the wire. I would lean to place a small wager on the Cardinals +1.5 on the runline at home tonight.
